Watch the full getting started video for a guided walkthrough of the SANDMARC Telephoto 6× Lens — setup, the focus wheel, tripod use, and shooting at distance.

  1 Compatibility

The Telephoto 6× Lens is compatible with all iPhone models. It attaches via the threaded mount on a SANDMARC case — a case is required. The 6× Lens does not include a clip mount and cannot be used without a compatible SANDMARC case.

⚠️  A SANDMARC case is required. The 6× Lens is heavier and longer than most lenses — it must be secured via the threaded aluminium mount in a SANDMARC case. A clip mount is not included or compatible. Cases are sold separately.
⚠️  Minimum focus distance: 16 feet (approx. 5 metres). The Telephoto 6× Lens cannot focus on subjects closer than 16 feet. It is designed for distant subjects — do not attempt to use it for nearby objects, portraits at arm's length, or any subject within a few metres.
ℹ️  For best sharpness: SANDMARC recommends shooting at with the lens attached for the sharpest results — this uses the main 48MP sensor on modern iPhones. To combine the 6× lens with the iPhone's built-in 2× or 3× camera for up to 12× total zoom, a tripod is required to eliminate shake at that magnification level.
ℹ️  Sharper than iPhone's native telephoto: The 6× Lens paired with the main 1× camera renders sharper images and better low-light performance than the iPhone's built-in telephoto camera, which uses a smaller dedicated sensor.
  2 Camera Location Guide

The Telephoto 6× Lens mounts over the wide-angle (1×) camera via the SANDMARC case. Select your iPhone model below to confirm the correct camera position.

ℹ️  Quick check: Open Camera and tap — that's the camera to mount the Telephoto Lens over. Keep Camera at 1× for the sharpest 6× optical result. To combine with the iPhone's built-in telephoto for up to 12×, a tripod is required.
  3 First Time Setup

Follow these steps before your first shoot. At 6× magnification, stability and the focus wheel are the two critical factors — the setup steps below address both.

1
Screw the lens onto your SANDMARC case

Thread the Telephoto 6× Lens into the aluminium lens mount on your SANDMARC case. Hand-tighten securely — the lens is 215g and will feel noticeably heavy on the phone. Ensure the connection is firm before pointing the camera at any subject.

2
Mount on a tripod

At 6× magnification, the slightest hand movement is dramatically amplified — even a gentle tremor will make distant subjects blur or jump out of frame. A tripod is strongly recommended for all stationary shots. Use the SANDMARC Tripod or any standard tripod with a phone mount.

⚠️ To use the lens at the iPhone's built-in 2× or 3× zoom level (for up to 12× combined), a tripod is required — handheld shooting at that magnification produces unusable results.
3
Open Camera and set to 1×

Open the iPhone Camera app and set it to . This uses the main sensor — the highest-quality camera in the phone — and gives you the best optical result from the lens. Do not tap the telephoto zoom option; the SANDMARC lens handles all the magnification.

4
Frame your subject and adjust the focus wheel

Point the camera at your subject — remember it must be at least 16 feet (5 metres) away. Once framed, rotate the focus wheel on the outer barrel of the lens until the subject appears sharp on screen. The focus wheel gives you precise manual control, which is especially valuable when iPhone autofocus struggles with distant or crowded scenes.

5
Lock exposure and shoot

Tap your subject on screen to set exposure, then tap and hold to activate AE/AF Lock. This prevents the camera from readjusting when you press the shutter. Use the volume button or a Bluetooth remote shutter to fire the shot without touching the phone.

  4 Mounting & Stability

The Telephoto 6× Lens requires a SANDMARC case to mount, and a tripod to get consistently usable results at this magnification level.

Required
Case Mount

The 6× Lens threads into the precision aluminium mount on a SANDMARC case. This is the only mounting option — no clip mount is included or compatible. Cases are sold separately.

Required for: All use
Strongly Recommended
Tripod

A tripod eliminates camera shake at 6×. Even with steady hands, slight movement at this magnification causes visible blur and makes reframing difficult. Use the SANDMARC Tripod or any tripod with a compatible phone mount.

Essential for: Wildlife, sports, architecture, 12× zoom
💡  Unlike the Telephoto 2× Lens which works well handheld, the 6× requires stable support in nearly all situations. The heavier lens also means the phone will feel front-weighted — a tripod evenly distributes this load and keeps your framing steady between shots.
  5 Shooting Tips

Practical tips for getting sharp, well-exposed shots at 6× — from wildlife at distance to low-light close-ups of subjects across the street.

Always shoot at 1×

Keep Camera at 1× for the sharpest results — the main sensor combined with the optical lens delivers noticeably better quality than the iPhone's native telephoto camera. Only combine with the built-in zoom for extra reach when your subject demands it, and only on a tripod.

Use the focus wheel for precision

At distance, iPhone autofocus can struggle to lock onto the intended subject — especially when other objects are in the same frame. The manual focus wheel on the barrel gives you full control. Dial until your subject is pin-sharp, then lock AE/AF on screen before shooting.

Use AE/AF Lock and a remote shutter

Tap and hold on your subject to activate AE/AF Lock, preventing the camera from hunting for a new focus point when you shoot. Fire the shutter using the volume button or a Bluetooth remote to avoid any camera movement from physically pressing the screen.

Lean into bokeh and compression

At 144mm, you get a shallow depth of field and natural bokeh — backgrounds blur softly behind your subject. The background compression also makes distant elements appear larger and closer. Use this creatively: a landmark behind a person, a crowd behind an athlete, trees behind wildlife.

Choose subjects that hold still

The 6× works best with subjects that aren't moving unpredictably — wildlife that stays in frame, buildings, landmarks, a stage performer in a fixed position. If your subject is fast-moving and you need to reframe constantly, the Telephoto 2× is a better choice.

Works in low light

Multi-coated glass maximises light throughput, and pairing the lens with the main 1× sensor (which has a larger aperture than the telephoto camera) gives better low-light results than you'd get using iPhone's native zoom. Still, longer exposures at 6× require a tripod — any movement at this magnification will blur a night shot.

  6 Telephoto 6× vs Telephoto 2×

SANDMARC makes two telephoto lenses: the 6× (144mm) and the 2× (58mm). Both zoom in optically from the main camera, but they serve very different scenarios and have different handling requirements.

The 6× lens is for reaching subjects far away — wildlife in a field, athletes across a stadium, a building across town. It produces dramatic background compression and natural bokeh at distance, and its manual focus wheel gives you control that autofocus can't when the scene is busy. But it requires a tripod, can't focus within 16 feet, and is not suited to moving subjects where you need to reframe quickly.

The 2× lens is the more flexible everyday telephoto. It handles moving subjects, works well handheld, focuses as close as 30cm, and produces the natural compression of a classic 58mm portrait lens. It's the right choice for portraits, street photography, events, and any situation where you're close enough to your subject to be affected by a 16-foot minimum focus distance.

ℹ️  Not sure which to choose? If your subject is far away, mostly stationary, and you want maximum reach — choose the 6×. If your subject is within arm's reach to about 15 metres, may be moving, or you need a versatile handheld lens for daily use — choose the 2×.
